ICT Integration in teaching learning of Mathematics for grade 3 on "Moving Shapes".

In this 21st century, the integration of ICT has become a crucial part and can’t do away with it. It immensely supports teaching and learning process in classroom at all levels. ICT integration assists teachers to the global requirement to replace traditional teaching methods with a technology-based teaching and learning tools and facilities. It’s one of the main elements in transforming the country to the future development.

In view of that, I have tried out integrating ICT in teaching “Moving shapes” in mathematics for grade 3. Such integration allowed students to be more organized and efficient in which they can take in information and ideas beyond the text. The process of adoption of ICT integration is felt as not a single step, but it is ongoing and continuous steps that fully support teaching and learning and information resources. Thus, children during my mathematics class stayed active and participated actively. Before I introduced the topic I made children to watch a short video clip on “Moving Shapes” and based on the video clips the class brainstormed and generated discussions on what they got from the video clip. Students were fully engaged and interested in learning as they responded and participated actively in the discussion.

On the other hand, children were benefited a lot from ICT integration where they are not bounded to the limited curriculum and resources, instead the integration was designed in such a manner that they get stimulated their understanding about the particular topic. Moreover, it helped me to design my lesson in an effective, creative and interesting approach that resulted in students’ active learning process. Thus, I would urge my teacher friends to incorporate ICT in teaching learning as it really enhances the learning process of the children and maximizes their abilities in active learning of the lesson.

Integrating ICT in Teaching and Learning

Grade: III

Subject: Mathematics

Topic: - Polygons and its types

Integration of ICT in the classroom has become an integral part of day to day teaching and learning processes. It adds values by enhancing the effectiveness of learning and providing the clear concept of the lesson. ICT also plays a significant role in motivating students’ learning, and supports students’ engagement with collaborative learning. ICT is one of the most powerful weapons which are accessible for every teacher in intensifying wholesome education to every learner in the school. It influences every aspects of learner's life in all round development of the child. It enriches the learners to understand and learn in a better way through integration of ICT.

Thus, on 8th August 2019, I taught a Mathematics lesson on “Polygon” for grade 3 through a short video clips to see the impact in teaching and learning processes. To mention some of the experiences, as a beginner, it was so tough for me to choose the appropriate topic besides planning of the lesson which was another trouble for me. However, with the guidance and support from my teacher colleagues, I started planning and preparing of the lesson with much interest. I admit that, to incorporate ICT into teaching and learning, it requires lots of preparation and planning before visiting and delivering the actual teaching. For instance, in my lesson, I had to look for the relevant topic, select relevant clips based on the topic, think of the follow up activities and manage time for preparation. These were some of the rich experiences that I got hold of it and made the lesson a successful one.
It was noticed that delivering lesson through ICT had a greater impact in the learner. It helped the children to learn in a way they learn and acquire knowledge as required.  Through the video clip, children could get the clear concept of “Polygon?” After having watched the clip, they were provided with sets of questions as a follow up activity in which it helped me to achieve the set lesson objectives effectively. On the other hand, I also gained lots of experiences in planning, preparation, management and delivering of the lessons interestingly and children were actively engaged in the learning process through listening and attempting questions as a follow up activity.
Nonetheless, due to lack of resources, our classrooms don’t have fixed OHP and have to manage time for fixing and preparation. It could have been much effective if the individual classes have the fixed OHP whereby time can be utilized fruitfully and end the lesson on time. Although the children were so excited, the language used in the clip was not up to the level of their standard and made me to replay the video clip for the second time.  Thus, keeping all those draw backs at the back of my mind, I would re-teach the lesson with much confidence by giving more video clips of such kids to get familiar with the language usage.
To conclude, I often felt that, it is difficult to integrate ICT into everyday curriculum but after having taught the lesson, incorporating of ICT in teaching and learning enhances the process of learning which contributes to intellectual development of the learners. It also helps the learners to express the meaning of the lesson and assist to think in unique ways through sight, sound and reflection. Thus, I urge every teacher in the schools to incorporate ICT in the lesson as it has immense effect on children's learning and provides opportunities for children to learn to operate in an information age.
